Palmellosphaerium M. O. P. Iyengar, 1971

Holotype species: Palmellosphaerium planktonicum M.O.P.Iyengar

Description: Colonial thalli forming hollow spheres 190-210 &m diameter with cells embedded in peripheral mucilage layer ca. 40 &m thick. Cells spherical, 15-20 &m diameter, about 30-40 &m apart, with cells at apices of triangular arrays. Spaces between cells with cavities in mucilage, these triangular in surface view, more or less rounded in transverse section, cavities to about 20 &m deep, with 4-5 &m mucilage layer between base of cavity and hollow center. Cell walls smooth, without spines or projections. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with single pyrenoid. Flagellated stages and mechanism of reproduction unknown. Palmellospharium planktonic in freshwater; reported only from southern India in pool and irrigation tank. Fott (1974) suggested that the genus might represent poorly preserved collections of some volvocalean alga. Genus will retain uncertain status and affinities until further collections examined and reproductive stages studied.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
