Coenolamellus Proshkina-Lavrenko, 1966

Original publication and holotype designation: Proschkina-Lavrenko, A.I. (1966). Novye rod i vid iz poriadka protokokkovykh vodorosley [A new genus and species from the order Protococcales]. Genus novum et species nova ex ordine Protococcales. Novitates Systematicae Plantarum Non Vascularium 3: 60-62, 1 pl., 17 figs.

Description: Solitary or more commonly colonial groups up to 16 cells without conspicuous mucilaginous envelope. Cells distincly flattened, 13-16.5 x 9.5-13 x 3-3.3 µm. In face view cells oval to ellipsoidal, in side view fusiform with rounded ends. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast parietal and band shaped with conspicuous central pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospore formation and colony fragmentation; 4 (-8) spores per sporangium. Spores released by dissolution of sporangial wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Coenolamellus planktonic in brackish water; found only in Caspian Sea in salinity of 3.6 0/00. Coenolamellus similar to Chlorolobion, Choricystis and Selenoderma from which it differs based on cell shape, number of autospores, absence of mucilage and presence of a pyrenoid.
