Description: Thalli unicellular or colonial to 20-60 µm, comprised of 2-4-8-16 to many cells embedded in structureless mucilage envelope. Cells ellipsoid to oval, attached to one another by remnants of parental cell walls, in irregular chains. Cells 10-25 x 6-13 µm, with smooth cell walls, type species with polar thickenings. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts 1-4 and parietal each with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, mostly 4 per mother cell; sporangium only slightly enlarged by development of autospores. Spores released by rupture and disintegration of cell walls. Spores remaining attached at one end for some time to remains of sporangium walls and forming irregular catenate chains that can persist until next round of sporangial formation. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction absent. Catenocystis planktonic in lakes in Europe. Genus similar to Oocystella but distinguished by absence of conspicuous cell enlargement during autospore formation.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
