Holotype species: Ettliella tetraspora F.Hindák
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Thalli oval to spherical colonies, 20-30 µm diameter, comprised on 2-4-8-16 cells in structureless mucilaginous envelope. Cells oval, 6.5-10 x 1-6 µm, generally arranged in tetrads with cells in parallel and empty space in center in polar view. Cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2 or mostly 4 per sporangium; released by gelatinization of expanded mother cell walls. Flagellated cells and sexual reproduction unknown. Ettliella planktonic in freshwater, known only from fishpond and lake in Moravia and Finland. Genus distinguished by cell shape and arrangement, and mechanism of spore release.
