Description: Cells solitary, ellipsoid, subsphaerical or pyriform, 22-55 µm in diameter. Cell wall irregularly thickened and stratified in the thickened portions. Chloroplasts numerous, discoid to angular, parietal with -- in young cells -- one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by numerous small autospores liberated through an opening in the mother cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Excentrosphaera uncommon in freshwater, but known to be of wide-spread occurrence in Europe and North America
