Description: Microscopic cells, solitary, planktonic. Cell fusiform 90-120 µm long and 2-4 µm wide, one pole tapers gradually to a long bristle with a lanceolate extension 5-6 µm long and 0.8-1.5 µm wide. The posterior pole tapers gradually to a long bristle. Asexual reproduction by zoospores liberated by splitting of mother cell wall in the equatorial region or the formation of a hole. Resting spores also reported. Sexual reproduction unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Comments: Species of Lanceola are cosmopolitan in lakes and pools.
This genus is rejected by several authorities. LM observations of dried material or TEM micrographs indicate that lanceolate extension is a double leaf-like appendages typical of Ankyra. Except for lanceolate position of these appendages, little can justify the separation of Lanceola from Ankyra.
