Type designated in: Fott, B. (1964). Notes on the taxonomy and morphology of some algae cultivated in the culture collection of algae at the Botany Department of Charles University. Acta Univ. Carol., Biol. 1964: 111-127.

Description: Thalli colonial, forming spherical to irregular masses, with cells embedded in structureless gelatinous envelope. Cells spherical to ellipsoid, 8.5-16 µmdiameter or long, with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast single lobed and parietal, without pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 4 per sporangium; spore release by rupture of sporangial wall; spores remaining attached in a group to parental wall fragments which eventually dissolve. Biflagellate zoospores, 5-8 x 2-2.5 &m, 8-32 per sporangium. Zoospores with eyespot; released as a group in vesicle from parental cell. Sexual reproduction unknown. Heliochloris planktonic in freshwater; reported only from Europe in moors and pools. Heleochoris and Heleococcus segregated by Fott (1974) into their own family Heleochloridaceae. Genus considered synonymous with Dictyosphaerium by Bourrelly.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
