Holotype species: Oncosaccus tetrasporoides C.-C.Jao

Original publication and holotype designation: Jao, C.-C. (1947). Studies on Oncosaccus tetrasporoides, gen et sp. nov. Botanical Bulletin of Academia Sinica 1: 53-66, pls I, II.

Description: Thalli colonial to 1.5 cm diameter with numerous cells embedded in thick gelatinous envelope with globular to irregular outline. Cells spherical to ellipsoid, 8-10 µmdiameter with smooth cell walls in groups of 2 or 4 . Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, lobed to stellate with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by cell division, colony fragmentation and by aplanospores. Sexual reproduction isogamous; gametes biflagellate with two, long, apically-inserted flagella. Planozygote quadriflagellate for short period before settling, producing gelatinous envelope and dividing into four aplanospores (meiosis?). Oncosaccus attached in standing freshwater; reported only from China. Thalli initially attached to substratum, may become detached and free-floating. Clarification of taxonomic status and relationships requires further study.
