Classification:
Empire Eukaryota
Kingdom Plantae
Phylum Chlorophyta
Class Chlorophyceae
Order Chlamydomonadales
Family Chlorococcaceae

Holotype species: Emergosphaera superficialis W.W.Miller

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Description: Solitary, spherical, oval to pear shaped cells to 40 µm diameter. Cell walls thin and smooth. Cells ?uninucleate when young, multinucleate when mature; chloroplast parietal and band shaped, without pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate, naked zoospores; 6-16 (-32) per sporangium. Zoospores 6-8 &m long, with band shaped chloroplast and stigma, but apparently without contractile vacuoles. Isogamous sexual reproduction; gametes similar to zoospores. Zygote 12-13 µm diameter. Emergosphaera neustonic with zoospores planktonic in freshwater puddles; reported only from former USSR from Kursk. Genus incompletely described and of doubtful taxonomic significance. According to Komárek and Fott (1983), genus similar to Nautococcus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
