Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Unicellular thalli ellipsoidal to cylindrical. Two anterior isokont flagella. Small papillum may be present. Stigma present. Chloroplast cup-shaped but lacking pyrenoids. Uninucleate with centrally positioned nucleus. Cell wall appressed to the protoplast at the posterior pole but expanding into a a flattened, wing-like appendage at the anterior pole. The wall flattens in a single plane, parallel to the long axis of the cell and to the plane of flagellar insertion, giving the appearance of two anterior wings or keels. Two apical contractile vacuoles. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis resulting in four daughter zoospores. First division is longitudinal without any rotation of the protoplast. Palmella stages with copious mucilage have been reported. No sexual stages have been observed in this genus. Peterfiella has (apparently) only been reported from Rumania. No ultrastructural, biochemical, or molecular data are available for this organism.
