Description: Thalli cushion like-tufts of radially arranged filaments. Filaments uniseriate and much branched. Primary filament prostrate, bearing secondarily erect branches, often with terminal long, basally inflated, unicellular, hyaline hairs. Cells short, uninucleate, each with parietal and band or plate-like chloroplast and 1 or 2 pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by pyriform or ellipsoidal aplanospores, terminal in secondary branches. Other reproductive structures unknown. Chaetomnium known only from submerged aquatics in a mountainous region of China and in the Himalayas (Nepal). Genus characterised by large size and pyriform or ellipsoidal shape of aplanospores. Aplanosporangia also referred to as 'akinetes' in original description; further study necessary to clarify relationship between 'aplanosprangia' and 'akinetes'.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
