Description: Plants heterotrichous, forming hemispherical and heavily lime-encrusted tufts, consisting of branched, uniseriate filaments differentiated into prostrate and erect systems. Cells uninucleate, cylindrical and elongate, each with very pale green, parietal chloroplast confined to distal end and 1-4 pyrenoids. Hairs arising from distal end of cell, often swollen at base, sometimes separated from cell by wall. Reproduction by bottle-shaped and lateral cells interpreted as sporangia. Zoospores or swarmers unknown. Akinetes uncertain. Fridaea grows in moving water in Europe, rarely recorded.
