Original publication and holotype designation: Fan, K.C. (1964). A new family name and a new generic name in the Chlorophyceae. Acta Phytotax. Sin. 9: 101.

Description: Plants globular or lenticular in shape, 1-6 cm in diameter, hollow and pseudoparenchymatous, attached by simple or branched rhizoids. Thallus 2 or 3 layered outer cells small and pyriform or conical, inner cells large and spherical. Cells uninucleate with single parietal chloroplast and several pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores, 4 to 16 produced in each of many slightly modified outer cells. Sexual reproduction unknown. Jaoa grows on stones in running water and endophytically in Cladophora. Reported from China and Europe. It was suggested that J. endophytica is synonymous with Ectochaete endophytica (Moebius) Wille because it possesses hairs.
