Holotype species: Cladogonium ogishimae H.Hirose & M.Akiyama

Original publication and holotype designation: Hirose, H. & Akiyama, M. (1971). A colorless, filamentous chlorophyceous alga, Cladogonium ogishimae gen et sp. nov., parasitic on fresh-water shrimps. Botanical Magazine, Tokyo 84: 137-140.

Description: Small, tufty, ectoparasite on shrimps. Rhizoids consisting of colourless, cylindrical cells, branched, arising from basal cell of erect filaments and entering the hypodermic tissue of host. Erect filaments oppositely or alternately branched, 20-30 cells longs. Cell long-cylindric, 40-180 um long and 17-35 um wide, with 4-8 nuclei but no chloroplasts, colourless. Branches terminated by large, green, club-shaped zoospororangia, 440-790 um long and 130-210 um in diameter, containing numerous discoid chloroplasts. Asexual (?) reproduction by quadriflagellate green zoospores. Method of sexual reproduction unknown. Cladogonium known only from Japan in freshwater.
