Description: Thalli colonial, forming 4-celled coenobia, these aggregated to produce compound colonies to 16 cells. Structureless mucilaginous envelope present or absent. Cells cruciately arranged with space in center of coenobium. Cells kidney or egg-shaped and slightly bent, 4-8 x 2-6 µm. Cell walls mostly smooth, rarely with polar thickening. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts single and parietal, without pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 4 per sporangium and organized into coenobia; released by rupture of parental cell walls. Remains of parental cell walls remaining distinct within envelope or attaching newly produced coenobia to one another in compound colony which fragments when walls dissolve. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction absent. Tetranephris planktonic or associated with benthic vegetation in freshwater; reported from Brazil and Taiwan (type species) and Europe (T. europea) with both species apparent endemics. Genus placed in subfamily Danubioideae with Danubia, Komarekia and Pseudotetrastrum. Species distinguished based on details of cell size and shape

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
