Cylindrocapsopsis Iyengar, 1957

Holotype species: Cylindrocapsopsis indica M.O.P.Iyengar

Original publication and holotype designation: Iyengar, M.O.P. (1957). On the structure and life-history of Cylindrocapsopsis indica gen. et sp. nov., a new member of the Cylindrocapsaceae. Journal of Madras University, section B 27: 49-70, pls I, II.

Description: Filaments unbranched and predominantly uniseriate. Juveniles attached by elongate or obconical holdfast, later free-floating. Juveniles uniseriate, at maturity locally arranged in more than one series resulting from oblique or longitudinal cell division(s). Cell wall thick and lamellate with concentric rings around each cell. Young cells somewhat elongate and oblong, older cells oblong to quadrate. Apical cell conical and elongate. Chloroplast axile and stellate, with single central pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction not observed; probably by zoospores. Sexual reproduction oogamous and dioecious. In female filaments one large quadriflagellate swarmer (gynospore) develops per cell; after release and attachment developing into unicellular, thick-walled oogonium with one ovum. In smaller male filaments, single small quadriflagellate swarmers (androspores) formed per cell; after release and attachment producing unicellular antheridium with 4 quadriflagellate antherozoids. After fertilization, oospore (zygote) undergoes dormancy. Cylindrocapsopsis found once in pond near Madras (India). Cylindrocapsopsis closely resembles Cylindrocapsa, differing in unique pattern of sexual reproduction.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
