Description: Filaments short, 3-7 celled, uniseriate, unbranched or showing false branching. Cells enclosed by firm hyaline gelatinous sheath. Cells variable in shape, subspherical, ellipsoid, oblong or subpyriform, often (slightly) curved. Cell membrane thick, distinctly lamellate. Cell contents granular. Vegetative multiplication by breakage into short-celled fragments; method of sexual reproduction unknown. Psephotaxus epiphytic on Cyanophyceae in Africa and Europe. Psephotaxus doubtful taxonomically. In original description no cell shape or cytology given, starch presence equivocal, and an adequate figure was lacking.
