Ulotrichopsis L.Wichmann, 1937

Holotype species: Ulotrichopsis cylindrica L.Wichmann

Original publication: Wichmann, L. (1937). Studien über die durch H-Stück-Bau der Membran ausgezeichneten Gattungen Microspora, Binuclearia, Ulotrichopsis und Tribonema. Pflanzenforschung 20: 11-110, plus 8 pls .

Description: Filaments unbranched and uniseriate. Compound cell wall of delicate rings closely covering each other, alternate or imbricate, or without regular pattern when rings being disposed exteriorly at one lateral cell wall to become displaced interiorly underneath adjacent rings at the opposite site. Cells cylindrical, strongly adherent, uninucleate. Chloroplast single, girdle-shaped, with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by spherical to ellipsoid aplanospores arising 1-4 per cell; sexual reproduction unknown. Ulotrichopsis found twice in salt-springs in Germany. The cell wall architecture and quartets of aplanospores distinguish Ulotrichopsis from Ulothrix. It is possible, however, that these features are morphological adaptations of a freshwater Ulothrix species to extreme conditions in salt-springs.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
