Holotype species: Helkesimastix faecicola Woodcock & Lapage
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Tiny (1-7 µm), pyriform, colorless cell, with one trailing flagellum; not euglenoid in appearance, having an anterior nucleus, no reservoir and a double row of bodies in a groove (suggesting Cryptophyceae). Calway and Lackey (1962) place it close to Clautriavia; Bourrelly (1970) suggests it might be a bodonid; Patterson and Zölffel (1991) suggest Cercomonas, a colorless biflagellate with heterodynamic flagella. Polluted freshwaters; very rare, UK and USA.
