Swarchewskiella Yasnitsky [Yasnitskii], 1931

Holotype species: Swarchewskiella rotans Yasnitsky

Description: Unicellular epiphyte on the stalks of diatoms (Gomphonema, Didymosphaenia). The cell is without a wall but located in a closed, hemispherical, gelatinous theca. The four flagella, by the movement of which the cell can move inside the theca, extend through the theca. Each cell has a parietal chloroplast with a single basal pyrenoid and a stigma located in the anterior half of the cell. Vegetative division by quadriflagellate zoospores. The upper part of the theca opens as an operculum, releasing 4-8 zoospores. Sexual reproduction by fusion of quadriflagellate gametes, smaller than the zoospores but morphologically similar. This remarkable green alga shows some similarity to Prasinochloris, but ultrastructural studies have not been performed and the phylogenetic affinity is therefore uncertain.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
