Original publication and holotype designation: D'Archino, R., Nelson, W.A. & Zuccarello, G.C. (2012). Stauromenia australis, a new genus and species in the family Kallymeniaceae (Rhodophyta) from southern New Zealand. Phycologia 51(4): 451-460.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Saunders, G.W., Huisman, J.M., Vergés, A., Kraft, G.T. & Le Gall, L. (2017). Phylogenetic analyses support recognition of ten new genera, ten new species and 16 new combinations in the family Kallymeniaceae (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta).
