Description: Vegetative cells uninuclear, spherical, planktonic. Single pot-shaped chloroplast with starch covered pyrenoid, penetrated by a bunch of thylakoids. Asexual reproduction by autosporulation, sexual reproduction not observed. Cell wall composed of two layers, the outer layer containing extended microfibrillar material. Genus differs from other genera of the family by the order of the nucleotides in SSU and ITS rRNA gene sequences.
