Oztralia R.A.Townsend & Huisman, 2018, nom. illeg.

Holotype species: Oztralia gabrielsonii R.A.Townsend & Huisman

Original publication and holotype designation: Townsend, R.A. & Huisman, J.M. (2018). 'Coralline algae'. In: Algae of Australia. Marine benthic algae of north-western Australia. 2. Red algae. (Huisman, J.M. Eds), pp. 86-97, 105-137, 143-146. Canberra & Melbourne: ABRS & CSIRO Publishing.

Description: Thallus encrusting, warty to lumpy, non-geniculate. Thallus monomerous in construction. Medulla multilayered, coaxial, at least 20% of the thallus thickness, often 40–50%, produced by short to elongate intercalary initials that subtend epithallial cells. Cortex with megacytes in loose horizontal fields, with numerous cortical cells scattered between some, but not all, of the megacytes. Cortical filaments terminated externally by epithallial cells. Many but not all (ca. 60%) intercalary initials fusing before the formation of cortical cells. Sporangial conceptacles with bisporangia or tetrasporangia.

Information kindly contributed by R.A. Townsend & J.M. Huisman (2018). but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dawsoniolithon.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Townsend, R.A. & Huisman, J.M. (2018). Transfer of Oztralia gabrielsonii and Oztralia orbiculata to Dawsoniolithon (Corallinales, Rhodophyta). Notulae Algarum 78: 1-2.

Comments: Oztralia is separated from Floiophycus by the presence of a coaxial medulla, the frequency of initial fusion vs cortical cell production, and differences in the anatomy of the megacyte fields.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
