Pseudocaulacanthus Huisman, 2018

Holotype species: Pseudocaulacanthus spinescens Huisman

Original publication and holotype designation: Huisman, J.M. (2018). Algae of Australia. Marine benthic algae of north-western Australia. 2. Red algae. pp. [i]-xii, 1-672, 189 figs. Canberra & Melbourne: ABRS & CSIRO Publishing.

Description: Thallus turf-like, with prostrate and erect terete axes. Prostrate axes attached to the substratum by clusters of multicellular rhizoids. Structure uniaxial; apical cell not obvious, but the central filament very prominent in section. Each cell of the central filament bearing 1 (rarely 2) periaxial filaments, these dichotomously branched and radiating outwardly and distally, eventually forming a filamentous cortex. Rhizoidal cells common, arising from medullary cells, forming linking filaments and secondary connections with other medullary filaments and producing a reticulum. Pseudoparenchyma absent. Tetrasporangia zonately divided arising in nemathecia on apices of erect axes.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
