Cryptocallis J.M.Huisman & G.W.Saunders, 2018

Holotype species: Cryptocallis dixoniorum Huisman & G.W.Saunders

Original publication and holotype designation: Huisman, J.M. & Saunders, G.W. (2018). Sebdeniales. In: Algae of Australia. Marine benthic algae of north-western Australia. 2. Red algae. (Huisman, J.M. Eds), pp. 298-303. Canberra & Melbourne: ABRS & CSIRO Publishing.

Description: Thallus blade-like, prostrate, attached basally and secondarily from ventral surfaces by haptera. Structure multiaxial; inner medulla filamentous; outer medulla with 3 or 4 layers of ellipsoidal, ovoid or subspherical cells, grading to a 3- or 4-layered cortex of pigmented cells. Spermatangia on dorsal surface, terminal on elongate mother cells. Carpogonia arising directly from an intercalary supporting cell, presumably post-fertilisation connecting filaments arising directly from the carpogonium; auxiliary cells intercalary in separate cortical filaments; diploidisation by a single terminating connecting filament. Gonimoblast initial borne singly on auxiliary cell, cutting off several gonimolobe initials that produce clusters of rounded to angular carposporangia; gonimoblast initial fusing with the auxiliary cell, with small satellite cells encircling it proximal to the gonimolobes. Cystocarps communal within a conjoined nemathecial pericarp formed by extension of subcortical cells, the cortex remaining as an outer layer; gonimoblasts surrounded by a reticulum of filaments. Tetrasporangia arising in dorsal nemathecia, irregularly cruciately divided.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
