Description: Plant consisting of a extensive rhizomatous creeping intertwined perennial basal portion, attached by means of discs from which arise uprights that are terete when vegetative. Growth of uprights from a 3-sided apical cell. Some populations of B. bifurcata with inflations, otherwise evesiculate. Branches from upright system produced in a triradiate fashion, although branching pattern ultimately appearing irregular or bilateral. Swollen terminal portions of the erect system become terete or slightly flattened receptacles. Plants and individual conceptacles monoecious or dioecious, producing one egg per oogonium.
