Description: Cells solitary, elongate-cylindric with straight or sides margins and smooth, truncate ends (rarely with ring of small granules around each semicell apex). Cells up to 26 times longer than broad, with shallow median constriction (isthmus) where semicell walls overlap. Plications or small granules on each side of isthmus diagnostic for genus. Cell wall with scattered pores and narrow gelatinous sheath. Chloroplast one per semicell, stellate in end view, with axial row of several pyrenoids. Nucleus in isthmus. Asexual reproduction by cell division and new semicell morphogenesis typical of Cosmarium-type desmids (see Cosmarium). Sexual reproduction unknown. Docidium cosmopolitan but usually rare; in acidic, oligotrophic lakes and ponds. D. baculum most widespread species.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
