Description: Cells bipolar, with apical elevations. A fossil marine genus found mainly in the Eocene but extending into the lower Oligocene; it is monotypic if Rutilariopsis is a valid genus (see VanLandingham, 1978). Valves linear to linear-lanceolate, with crenulate margin and a marked central expansion. Valve face undulate, domed at the centre, and with a marginal flange separating it from the shallow vertical mantle which has an upturned edge, apices elevated. Areolae distant and scattered on the central swelling, more closely spaced over the remainder of the valve and mantle. On the central swelling there appear to be one or two external tubes, which might possibly be the exit tubes of rimoportulae. The apical elevations probably contain ocelli.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Nikolaev, V.A., Kociolek, J.P., Fourtanier, E., Barron, J.A. & Harwood, D.M. (2001). Late Cretaceous diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) from the Marca Shale member of the Moreno Formation, California. Occasional Papers of the California Academy of Sciences 152: 1-119, 39 plates.

Comments: The specimen is eroded and we cannot determine adequate detail for a full description. The affinities probably lie with the genera Solium Heiberg and the new genus Monile Ross & Sims. We have not been able to illustrate these or the other new genera Maluina Ross & Sims and Bonea Ross & Sims. For a details description of species of Psedorutilaria and the new genera, see Ross & Sims (1987).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
