Description: Thallus erect, filiform, 10-20 cm high, branched, gelatinous, attached to the substratum, which is usually seagrass, with a minute discoid holdfast. Medulla multiaxial, of elongated unpigmented sympodially branched filaments. Subcortex formed by few-celled, radially extending laterals. Cortex consisting of simple assimilatory filaments 20-40 cells long with basally rectangular, terminally ovoid cells and of phaeophycean hairs. Plurilocular sporangia transformed laterally from upper cells of assimilatory filaments. Unilocular sporangia formed at the base of assimilatory cells. Life history best studied in the economically important Cladosiphon okamuranus (Japanese name: Mozuku). Alternation of heteromorphic generations. Erect thalli are sporophytes that may reproduce directly via spores from plurilocular sporangia. Spores from unilocular sporangia develop into microscopic discoid gametophytes that form isogametes in erect uniseriate gametangia. Chromosome number in C. okamuranus is n=8, 2n=16. In Cladosiphon, germination of zoids is stellate as an adaptation to epiphytic growth.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
