Description: Medium-sized (50-90 µm) thecate dinoflagellate of subspherical-to-lenticular shape, characterized by a short apical horn and a large left sulcal list. Cingulum circular, dividing the cell into 2 parts of equal size. Sulcus characterized by a large flagellar pore. Plate formula: Po, X, 3', 1a, 6", 4c, 6(?)s, 5"', 1"". First apical plate 4-sided. Thecal plates smooth, sometimes with broad intercalary bands. Cytoplasm clear, most specimens reddish colored, no chloroplasts. Nucleus spherical-to-ovoid. Nutrition by pallium-feeding on diatoms and other phytoplankton species. Cysts (50-60 µm) dark brown in color, circular to sub-circular in outline with pronounced polar compression and slight dorsiventral compression. Inner body thick-walled (1-2 µm, microgranulate. Marine plankton, worldwide in coastal waters.
