Description: Gametophytic frond membranous; lanceolate, linear-lanceolate, linear, laciniate, orbiculate, ovate; mainly epilithic, occasionally epizoic, rarely epiphytic; frond color variable (pink, brown, purple, grey, red, olive green and thereof); usually few cm to one meter in length; monostromatic; 21.5–140 µm thick; vegetative cells containing one stellate plastid, rarely two; sexual thalli: (i) dioecious, (ii) monoecious and divided into male and female sectors by a vertical line, (iii) monoecioius with group of cells forming either spermatangia or zygotosporangia in streaks or patches, (iv) rarely monoecious with spermatangia and zygotosporangia intermixed in the fertile region of the thalli; occurring in the upper, mid, lower intertidal, or shallow subtidal in winter, spring, summer, or autumn. Distinguished from other bladed Bangiales by rbcL and 18S gene sequence differences.
