Original publication and holotype designation: Taylor F.J.R. (1963). Brachydinium, a new genus of the Dinococcales from the Indian Ocean. Journal of South African Botany 29: 75-78, pl. 7.

Description: Large (up to 120 µm) compressed cell, in the vegetative stage without flagella, non-motile. Narrow horn-like processes arise from cell body. Cingulum not very distinctive, perhaps reduced but separates the reduced hill-like epicone from the elongated hypocone from which 4 horns emerge, 2 laterally, slightly bent anteriorly and 2 others directed posteriorly. Clearly visible nucleus located in the hypocone; numerous chloroplasts. Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Marine plankton, in temperate to tropical waters of the Indian and Atlantic Ocean, may be abundant
