Description: Colonies microscopic with 4-32 (-138) cells in homogeneous mucilage; colony typically arranged in flat plane and with cells mostly in distinct diads or tetrads, either separate in mucilage or closely abutting. Cells hemispherical, wedge-shaped, oval or triangular, 4-13 x 7.5 &m. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, without pyrenoids. Colony growth by cell division in two dimensions; asexual reproduction by fragmentation of larger colonies. Sporulation, flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Dispora widely distributed in freshwater in temperate to tropical conditions. Colonies of Dispora similar to Crucigenia, however, formation of autospores unknown in Dispora. Species distinguished based colony shape and cell arrangement. D. globosa anomalous within genus in that colonies globular rather than planar and cells have a pyrenoid. Komárek and Fott (1983) suggested that this species may be referable to Coenocystis.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
