Description: Thallus erect from a holdfast of tangled stolons, distichously branched; branching irregularly alternate or regular and pinnate; branches strongly flattened distally. Structure uniaxial; medulla of thick-walled cells grading to a pigmented cortex of c. 3 cell layers; outermost cells slightly elongate anticlinally; elongate rhizines in the medulla and/or cortex. Spermatangia arising in sori on fertile branches. Female reproductive system with intercalary carpogonia directed towards both surfaces of the thallus; nutritive filaments originating from the basal cell of third-order filaments borne on second-order filaments situated alongside the central axis, then growing centripetally, forming a cylinder around the central axis. Gonimoblast filaments growing over the surface of the nutritive filaments; peglike protrusions from intercalary gonimoblast cells uniting with nutritive cells and forming a network. Gonimoblast cells surrounding the central core and linking to inner cortical cells on the lower side of the cystocarp where they do not form carposporangia; the rest producing carposporangia in basipetally maturing chains. Cystocarps attached to one side of the cystocarp floor, producing chains of carposporangia from the remaining three sides, seen as triangular in cross section. Tetrasporangia in sori.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
