Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Cells colonial, forming zig-zag chains; triagular in valve view, square in girdle view. Plastids numerous, irregularly discoid. A common marine epiphytic genus. Valves triangular with slightly raised, rounded elevations at the angles, which are separated from the rest of the valve by shallow furrows. Valve surface smooth or granular. Areolae large, containing cribra, arranged in rows radiating from the centre, where there may be a plain area; the central areolae are usually larger than those towards the edge of the valve face or on the mantle. Mantles distinct, vertical, areolate, the areolae being smaller beneath the elevations. Internally the valves have a plain central area and marginal ribbing - some ribs may be more developed. Ocelli raised on elevations; with a plain rim, surrounding rows of small pores. Rimoportulae central, opposite angles with long external tubes and scattered with short external tubes - probably variable amongst species. Cingulum of complete (?) copulae, with vertical rows of pores. Emend. Fenner, 1994: 120 (fide Strelnikova & Nikitina, 2018).

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Nikolaev, V.A., Kociolek, J.P., Fourtanier, E., Barron, J.A. & Harwood, D.M. (2001). Late Cretaceous diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) from the Marca Shale member of the Moreno Formation, California. Occasional Papers of the California Academy of Sciences 152: 1-119, 39 plates.

Comments: This genus has previously been placed in Triceratium, Biddulphia and Trigonium. Recently Glezer (1975) has created the new genus Sheshukovia and our concept of the genus is from her account. This and other triangular genera require detailed study before any conclusions can be drawn about generic limits and relationships.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
