Amscottia Grönblad, 1954

Holotype species: Amscottia mira (Grönblad) Grönblad

Original publication and holotype designation: Grönblad, R. (1954). Amscottia Gronbl. nom. nov. Botaniska Notiser 1954: 433.

Description: Cells solitary, large (92-189 um long including processes) and divided into semicells with shallow, median constriction; semicells with differing morphology. In A. mira an apical ring of 8-9 spines on one semicell only. Both semicells with basal whorl of 10 processes and subapical whorl of 6 processes all curved toward apex bearing spines. Chloroplasts 5-6 per semicell, each with single pyrenoid. A. gulungulana with ring of apical spines on both semicells and single whorl of 8-10 long, curved processes on both semicells; processes all curved toward one end of cell. Details of asexual reproduction unknown, but cell division typical of desmids presumed. Daughter cell morphogenesis, resulting in asymmetry of two semicells unstudied. Chloroplast structure unknown. Nothing known regarding reproduction. Cell division typical of desmids presumed. Amscottia known only from Brazil and Australia; A. mira in plankton of Lago da Boca do Igarapé Mentai, near Santarem, Brazil; A. gulungulana among submerged macrophytes in acidic billabongs, Northern Territory, Australia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
