Description: Cells solitary, short to elongate, usually narrowed toward ends, with shallow median constriction (isthmus) where semicell walls overlap, and deep incision in each semicell apex. Cells circular to subcircular in end view. Cell wall smooth with scattered pores or with lines of elongate scrobiculations. Chloroplast one per semicell, stellate in end view, with one or more pyrenoids in axial row. Nucleus in isthmus between chloroplasts. Asexual reproduction by cell division and new semicell morphogenesis typical of Cosmarium-type desmids (see Cosmarium). Sexual reproduction by conjugation known in three species. Gametangia come together within broad gelatinous envelope. Gametes move out of gametangia and fuse between them. Mature zygospores of T. brevissonii and T. granulatus spherical; those of T. laevis quadrangular, often with long projecting corners surrounded by empty gametangial semicells. Several species of Tetmemorus cosmopolitan; acidophilic, most commonly occurring among Sphagnum in bogs or in small ponds surrounded by Sphagnum. Pccasionally in subaerial habitats (among mosses or moist rocks).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
