Description: Thallus microscopic, prostrate, monostromatic, filamentous growth outward, with the inner region becoming pseudoparenchymatous and the distal filaments not consolidated but loosely growing at the circumference, so with an irregular thallus margin. Thalli typically growing epiphytically and firmly on other algae. Cells with a single chloroplast with a single pyrenoid. Reproduction by means of ordinary vegetative cells in the center of the thallus forming sporangia and cleaving typically into 8 zoospores. Sporangia first appearing in the center of the thallus and gradually being developed toward the periphery. The settled zoospores germinate by enlargement. After the first cell division the germlings often have one rounded, nearly globular cell with a diameter slightly larger than the other cell. Following the development, the young plants often show a bilateral symmetry.
