Description: Medium-sized (30-70µm) thecate dinoflagellate of more or less lenticular shape with a median located circular cingulum. The sulcus is restricted to the hypocone and is characterized by a large flagellar pore and a large left sulcal list. Epitheca with an apical pore. Plate formula: Po, X, 3', 2a, 6", 4c, ?s, 5"', 2"". Thecal plates smooth, sometimes with large intercalary bands. Cytoplasm clear, sometimes red colored. Nucleus spherical, no chloroplasts; nutrition by pallium-feeding on diatoms and other phytoplankton. Cysts spherical with numerous spines. Lebouraia Abé is regarded by Balech and Akselman (1988) as not distinct from Diplopelta. Marine planktonic, worldwide in coastal waters.
