Description: Thalli with compressed erect axes arising from a terete basal system; polysiphonous with 5(–6) pericentral cells; pericentral cells usually obscured by cortication (one to several layers); branching alternate and distichous, proximal segments of laterals congenitally fused with the bearing axis over 2–8 segments; vegetative trichoblasts lacking; prostrate system attached to the substrate by unicellular rhizoids. Tetrasporangia tetrahedral, developing in straight series near the apex, one per segment. Gametophytes dioecious, cystocarps or spermatangial branches developing subapically on laterals; spermantangial branches cylindro-conical, either lacking sterile apical cells or with 1(–3) sterile apical cells; cystocarps globular.
