Description: Cells in 4-8-16- celled colonies within markedly expanded mother cell walls and with hyaline mucilage envelope. Cells fusiform, oval or cylindrical but seldom symmetrically so, mostly slightly reniform, the apices rounded-acuminate to broadly rounded and not thickened, 6-38 x 2-14 &m. Cell wall smooth. Chloroplast single, parietal with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by (2)-4-8 autospores released by mucilaginization and rupture of the expanded mother cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Nephrocytium, planktonic, probably cosmopolitan in freshwater habitats. Similar to Nephrochlamys but possessing a pyrenoid and to Juranyiella but lacking cell wall granulations
