Acrosymphyton Sjöstedt, 1926

Lectotype species: Acrosymphyton purpuriferum (J.Agardh) G.Sjöstedt

Original publication: Sjöstedt, L.G. (1926). Floridean studies. Acta Universitatis Lundensis 22(4): 1-95, 41 figs.

Type designated in: Kylin, H. (1956). Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen. pp. i-xv, 1-673, 458 figs. Lund: C.W.K. Gleerups.

Description: Uniaxial, lubricous or mucilaginous, terete or slightly compressed. Axial cell with four determinate, pseudodichotomously branched laterals, terminal cells moniliform. Rhizoidal filaments present. Hairs reported. Pinkish red. Monoecious or dioecious. Carpogonium terminal on pinnately branched, distally recurved moniliform filament. One or more outgrowths of fertilized carpogonium contacting terminal cells of pinnate branches and sometimes other cells of carpogonial branch before initiating connecting filaments that contact a succession of terminal auxiliary cells on adventitious, usually unbranched, moniliform filaments. A single gonimoblast initial develops from connecting filament attached to auxiliary cell. Cystocarps small, compact, all cells maturing into relatively small carposporangia. No specialized nutritive tissue. Spermatangia superficial, one to several borne on each spermatangial mother cell. Tetrasporophyte, where known, heteromorphic, a Hymenoclonium-like crust. Tetrasporangia tetrahedral, produced under short-day conditions (night-breaks not inhibitory). Spore germination, one (or two) divisions within spore wall, then rhizoidal outgrowth, which becomes highly distichously branched.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
