Pachydinium Pavillard, 1915

Holotype species: Pachydinium mediterraneum Pavillard

Original publication and holotype designation: Pavillard, J. (1915). Péridiniens nouveaux du Golf du Lion. Comptes Rendus Hebdomaires des Séances et Mémoires de la Société de Biologie 1915(78): 120-122.

Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Large (about 100µm long) ovoid biflagellate heterodynamic cells with a cell wall of cellulosic plates. Plate formula Po, 3', 5", ?c, ?s, 5"', 3"", according to its author, although thecal plate sutures were very difficult to establish. Rampi (1952) gave the same plate formula but added information on two sulcal plates. This genus needs reinvestigation, some authors regard it as congeneric with Protoceratium Bergh. No information on cell content (chloroplasts?) available. Habitat: Marine plankton of warm waters, mainly recorded from the Mediterranean Sea
