Description: The parenchymatous thallus is up to 3 cm long and at maturity covered with club-shaped assimilatory filaments (paraphyses) between branched filaments in which the apical parts are later transformed into plurilocular sporangia. Doubtful taxonomic position due to uncertainty about mode of growth. The diagnosis states that growth is basal, but Batters' (1895) figures do not show a distinct meristem. The genus shows affinity to the genus Asperococcus (Punctariaceae), however, paraphyses and sporangia occur in sori in Asperococcus, in Buffhamia they cover the entire surface.

Comments: Very rare alga known only from the type locality in Dorset, England, where it grew epiphytially on Sauvageaugloia griffithsiana.
