Description: Thallus erect, regularly subdichotomously branched, with terete cartilaginous branches of ±uniform diameter throughout. Structure multiaxial; medulla a compact narrow core of longitudinal filaments; cortex pseudoparenchymatous, consisting of a broad inner cortex of large hyaline cells grading to an outer cortex of smaller pigmented cells. Secondary pit connections common. Carpogonial branches 3-celled, rarely 4-celled, inwardly or laterally directed with a reflexed trichogyne; zygote producing a non-septate connecting filament. Auxiliary cell an inner cortical cell; after diploidisation producing small-celled nutritive tissue outwardly and an inward gonimoblast initial, eventually developing a fusion cell with radial gonimoblasts bearing short chains of carposporangia. Cystocarps immersed but causing a swelling of the bearing branch, ostiolate, without enveloping tissue. Spermatangia unkown. Tetrasporangia scattered, lateral, zonately divided. Life history triphasic, with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes [after Womersley (1994)].

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
