Description: Cells solitary, elongate-cylindric (length not more than 85 µm), with shallow median constriction (isthmus) and truncate, three lobed ends. Terminal lobes with 1-4 small spines. Cell wall with scattered pores. One or two axial chloroplasts per semicell, stellate in end view, each with 1-3 pyrenoids. Nucleus in isthmus. Reproduction not described in detail. Asexual reproduction by the cell division and new semicell morphogenesis typical of Cosmarium-type desmids presumed (see Cosmarium). Zygotes only observed in T. spinulosum var. indicum. Conjugating cells more or less parallel within broad gelatinous sheath. Zygospore between gametangia, spherical with undulate external surface. Two species of Triplastrum with restricted distributions and rarely collected; T. simplex found only in France (lac de Grand-Lieu) and T. abbreviatum only in northern India (habitat unspecified). T. spinulosum, occurs in rice fields in southern U.S.S.R. and India, and in swamps and flooded areas in Africa. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
