Amphiceratium Vanhöffen, 1896

Holotype species: Amphiceratium fusus (Ehrenberg) Vanhöffen

Currently accepted name for the type species: Tripos fusus (Ehrenberg) F.Gómez

Original publication and holotype designation: Vanhöffen E. (1896). Das Genus Ceratium. Zoologischer Anzeiger 19: 133-134.

Description: Very long and slender (400-600 ( 20-30 &m) thecate, heterodynamic flagellates. The transverse flagellum encircles the short main body which extends into each a long apical and an antapical horn. The plate pattern is identical to that of Ceratium Schrank, therefore it is regarded only as a subgenus or section of Ceratium. Vegetative reproduction by binary fission, sexual reproduction by fusion of anisogametes; planozygotes with 2 longitudinal flagella. Cysts not known. Marine, planktonic, worldwide, mainly in coastal waters, may form mass developments, discolouring the sea water.
