Description: Cells solitary or in 4-celled colonies within the mother cell wall. Mucilage envelope lacking. Cells lunate, slightly twisted with broadly rounded to slightly acuminate apices, 3.5-10-(12) x 1-4 µm; colonies 11-20 µm in length. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, without a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by (2)-4-(8) autospores which may be retained within the mother cell wall, the latter becoming expanded but retaining the shape of the vegetative cell. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Chiefly distinguished from the closely related Nephrocytium by the absence of a pyrenoid and from Juranyiella by the absence of granulations on the cell wall. Nephrochlamys, planktonic, widely distributed in freshwater in Europe, Japan, North and Central America.
