Description: Cells solitary, attached to the substratum by a single unbranched stipe or, if attached by a pad, then the cells clustered. Frustules heteropolar, usually lying in girdle view. Valves linear to linear-lanceolate, heteropolar, with a bluntly rounded head pole and an acutely rounded foot pole. Valve face flat, sharply differentiated from the mantle. A strip of imperforate silica separates the striae into two portions. Striae uniseriate, containing transapically elongate areolae occluded near their external apertures by a delicate siliceous membrane. Internally the areolae open into two small pores. Foot pole with a row of pores (sometimes slit-like) through which mucilage is presumably secreted. Pseudosepta absent. Raphe central, straight. A short raphe system associated with the head pole; a longer one with the foot pole. Central raphe endings straight, simple, or expanded externally; simple internally. Terminal fissures absent, except at the base of some species where a small T-shaped fissure is present connecting the two basal areolae. Cingulum, where known, containing five open bands, each bearing one transverse row of round or elongate poroids restricted to the apices. Each band is curved advalvarly at its flexure to perform the function of a ligula for the preceeding band.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
