Original publication and holotype designation: Paddock, T.B.B. (1988). Plagiotropis Pfitzer and Tropidoneis Cleve, a summary account. Bibliotheca Diatomologica 16: 1-152, 38 pls.

Description: Frustules elliptical in outline, almost always lying in girdle view. Valves narrow with a highly vaulted raphe-bearing ridge, the line of the ridge forming a smooth curve from pole to pole with only a small depression at the central nodule, ridges lacking fins and fibulae; one side of valve higher than other forming a false ridge. Valves thin with punctate striae, extreme valve margin hyaline; raphe lies on ridge of valve, the central part of the raphe system is displaced from the apparent mid-line of the valve, one enlarged, tubular helictoglossa located at each pole, terminal micropyles absent. Girdle bands hyaline. Collected in plankton from the Antarctic and south Atlantic Oceans.
